THE CAT'S MIAOW

Welcome to the official Cat's Miaow home page. You know we always have a problem talking about ourselves and trying to describe what our music is all about, so we won't. Instead here is our entry in the excellent Badaboom Gramophone #3 "The bands not in the Trouser Press Guide,Guide". Alternatively, read on for more information and the most comprehensive Cat's Miaow discography you'll find anywhere.

The Cat's Miaow will only ever be Kerrie, Andrew, Bart and Cam.

The long goodbye

The Cat's Miaow

This Brunswick, Australia indie-pop foursome have never met a compilation they didn't like, offering tracks to more split-singles than Stereolab over the last five years. They've compiled almost everything on two comprehensive CDs, together totaling almost sixty songs culled from seven-inches, flexis, homemade cassettes and their contributions to indie-label comps by Shelflife, Harriet, Cassiel and Four Letter Words.

As suggested by song titles "You left a note on the table," "Nothing's ever quite that simple," "I can't sleep thinking you hate me," and my favorite, "What time is it there?," the Cat's Miaow wears its indie-pop heart on its sleeve. What sets the band apart from that crowd, however, is their uncommonly mature and literate lyrics. Their heartache is coupled with serious reflection, their songs carry the bitter sting of regret and loss, the mournfulness of a lifetime. They speak complicated, painful truths with great honesty and emotion. Yet, what's truly heartbreaking is the fluttering, fragile angel-wing melodies, with their dreamy, understated vocals. Sarah, '60s pop and old-school French sounds are the obvious influences on these gently chiming guitars. Also impressive is the breadth of their many covers, from Patsy Cline to the Beatles to Chris Bell.
